What is SuperScrubber?
SuperScrubber is peace of mind. SuperScrubber is a disk utility that serves to completely and permanently erase all data from a specified internal or external hard drive or partition, leaving no retrievable trace of the old data. What types of devices can SuperScrubber scrub?
SuperScrubber can erase an entire computer hard drive, an external drive, or just a partition of either. SuperScrubber can erase data from IDE (ATA), SCSI, USB, and Firewire disk devices. Fibre Channel and RAID disks are not supported.
How do I keep certain files from being scrubbed?
Scrubbing is permanent and cannot be reversed. If you have files or programs you need to save, you must do so before you start to use SuperScrubber. Save any necessary files on an external disk, a CD-RW, a DVD-RW, or on another partition of your hard drive that you are not scrubbing.
Can SuperScrubber scrub older versions of Macintosh hardware?
SuperScrubber can run on any Macintosh with a G3, G4, G5, or Intel processor (depending on the edition purchased) from the SuperScrubber bootable CD. The workaround for older hardware is to take the drive out of the old machine and temporarily put it in a newer machine that can run SuperScrubber and scrub the drive from there. It's a few more steps, but still much better than letting your private or confidential data run free!
Can I use SuperScrubber on a PC?
SuperScrubber only runs on an Apple Macintosh. However, if you have a disk in a PC you want to scrub, you can remove the disk from the PC, connect it to a Macintosh capable of running SuperScrubber and scrub the disk from the Macintosh.
Why doesn't the demo scrub anything?
The SuperScrubber demo allows you to evaluate the product and play with the features. It does everything BUT actually scrub. For that, you will need to purchase SuperScrubber from our online store, bargain priced at just $29.99.
Why can't I download SuperScrubber from the store?
SuperScrubber is delivered on a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM containing a licensed, bootable copy of Mac OS 10 for ease of scrubbing your computer's entire hard drive. Therefore the size is considerably large and not something we are able to distribute via the web. However, if you are in a hurry, SuperScrubber can be shipped to you as quickly as overnight by choosing the FedEx shipping option or you can call your local Mac store or Apple retail store and ask if they have SuperScrubber in stock.
What is the U.S. Department of Defense 5220.22 M standard??
The Department of Defense drafted a specification for handling and recycling equipment. In this document, the recycling of magnetic media, such as your hard drive, is performed by writing a series of data patterns on the magnetic media rendering the data unrecoverable by conventional means. This is what SuperScrubber's Military configuration does. The specification stipulates that magnetic media containing TOP SECRET data should be physically destroyed, however all classified and unclassified data on magnetic media can be sanitized using utilities such as SuperScrubber.
Do I need to use Disk Utility after scrubbing my disk?
When you finish scrubbing a disk or partition, SuperScrubber will prepare the disk or partition for reuse. For partitions, the name will remain the same. For disks, a new partition map is created with a single partition, named Untitled. If you need more than one partition, use Disk Utility (or Drive Setup for OS 9) to prepare your disks. Then install your Operating System.
Can I scrub just a file, a folder, or the empty space on a hard drive?
Scrubbing parts of a disk is not as safe as scrubbing the entire drive. For example, many applications utilize temporary and backup files while they are running. If you scrub a file you were just working on, it is highly possible that the data still exists on your hard drive because of a temporary or backup file used by the software you were running. See our other product AutoScrubber for a solution to this problem. Similarly, if you scrub only the free space on your hard drive, you are not safely scrubbing the shadow data below the existing data.
Why can't I scrub Disk Images?
Disk Images are a special kind of file that the operating system treats as if it were a physical storage device. Since the contents of a Disk Image is really contained within a file, it doesn't make sense to scrub a Disk Image. The secure route is to scrub the file system which contains the Disk Image, such as your hard drive or use our other product AutoScrubber.
How is Information "Written" on My Computer?
Disk drives use magnetism to save information on a disk. When the disk's "head" moves across the surface of the disk, it changes the magnetic properties of the disk's surface in order to represent a one or a zero over each bit.
What is shadow data?
Shadow Data is a security hazard to you, the computer user, unless you fully understand it. Shadow data occurs when you delete a file, drag it to the trash, or reformat your hard drive.
As files are deleted or dragged to the trash and then emptied, the areas they were saved on are not erased, but simply freed up for another layer of data to be written over it. Even after a new layer of data is written over the area, the old files are not completely erased. They leave magnetic footprints called "shadow data." Even reformatting your hard drive leaves your files accessible. Shadow Data leaves layers of information on your disk that can be recovered using special detective or forensic tools. This is why if you accidentally delete an important file, you can take your computer to a data recovery specialist and the information can most likely be recovered.
SuperScrubber understands the phenomenon of Shadow Data and writes data multiple times over your hard drive or partition to ensure all previous information can never be recovered, not even by fancy computer forensic tools. SuperScrubber conforms to the Department of Defense standard for disk sanitization (DoD 5220.22 M) when selecting the built-in Military Scrub configuration.
Why doesn't deleting or dragging files to the trash really erase them?
To REALLY erase files, you need SuperScrubber. Reformatting your hard drive, dragging them to the trash or deleting them isn't enough protection. Those files can still be retrieved with sophisticated data recovery tools. As files are deleted or dragged to the trash and then emptied, new data will eventually be written over the space the files previously occupied on your hard drive. The old files are not completely erased however, and leave magnetic footprints called "shadow data."
Why is SuperScrubber better than dragging them to the trash?
When you delete a file, drag it to the trash, or reformat your hard drive, the area it was saved on is not erased, but simply freed up for another layer of data to be written over it. The old files are not completely erased and leave magnetic footprints called "shadow data." Sophisticated data recovery tools are available for retrieving deleted files and information from damaged disks. SuperScrubber understands the phenomenon of Shadow Data and writes data multiple times over your hard drive to ensure all previous information can never be recovered. SuperScrubber conforms to the Department of Defense standard for disk sanitization when selecting the built-in Military Scrub configuration. And if you're even more paranoid than that, there are additional customizable levels of security, too.

SuperScrubber is perfect for everyone, from the casual home computer user to the largest of corporations. Be smart. Be safe. Use SuperScrubber.
What about files stored on a drive over a network?
You still need SuperScrubber. Many software programs periodically save your work in progress as a safety precaution should the program or computer crash. These periodically saved backup files are saved to your own hard drive, not to the network. Therefore bits and pieces of your work are at risk unless you use SuperScrubber to erase them.
What is an HFS+ file system?
The HFS+ file system is Apple's next-generation technology for storing files on your hard drive. Apple sometimes calls this technology the Mac OS Extended volume format. See Mac OS 10's Disk Utility application for more information.
Why doesn't SuperScrubber boot on my eMac?
The SuperScrubber CD contains a licensed, bootable version of Mac OS 10. The SuperScrubber 1.0 CD contains Mac OS 10.2.1. The SuperScrubber 1.0.1 and 1.1 CDs contain Mac OS 10.2.3. The version of Mac OS 10.2.3 does not boot on eMacs. Apple is aware of this and is correcting the problem. In the mean time, customers who have an eMac and wish to use SuperScrubber, please contact Jiiva (this is no longer true as SupperScrubber is no longer for sale) for a version 1.0 CD, which will work on eMacs. As of SuperScrubber 2.0 the problem has been corrected. eMac users will boot their Mac with the SuperScrubber G4 edition CD.
Why doesn't SuperScrubber boot on my new hardware?
The SuperScrubber CD contains a licensed, bootable version of Mac OS 10. When Apple releases new hardware containing significant changes, Apple may require a higher minimum version of Mac OS 10 than that on the SuperScrubber bootable CD. When the new version is available for Jiiva to include on the SuperScrubber CD, Jiiva will replicate new CDs and make them available (for a nominal fee) to existing customers. Keep in mind that SuperScrubber can still run on its own if you chose not to boot off the CD, however you will not be able to scrub the entire internal hard drive.
Why can't I install an Operating System after scrubbing?
When you finish scrubbing a disk or partition, SuperScrubber will prepare the disk or partition for reuse. In some instances SuperScrubber fails to prepare the disk for reuse. In those cases you will need to manually prepare the disk for reuse using your bootable install CD that came with your Mac or a retail copy of Mac OS that you purchased. If you're installing OS 10 follow these directions:
1. Boot your Mac with your Mac OS 10 install CD/DVD.
2. Continue through the install process until you see the menus appear at the top of the screen.
3. Find and select the Disk Utility menu (it is in different locations depending on the version of OS 10).
4. Select your hard drive device on the left side of the Disk Utility window.
5. Select the Partition Tab on the right side of the Disk Utility window.
6. Enter a name for your hard drive in the provided field.
7. Click the Partition button to initialize the hard drive.
8. When finished, quit Disk Utility to return to the installer process.
9. You should now be able to install OS 10 on your hard drive.
For installing OS 9 follow these directions:
1. Boot your Mac with your Mac OS 9 install CD.
2. Run the Drive Setup application found within the Utilities folder of the install CD.
3. Select your hard drive and select from the menus to Initialize the drive.
4. Quit Drive Setup and return to the OS 9 installer process.
5. You should now be able to install OS 9 on your hard drive.
